The Kew Gardens 50p — identifying a genuine one

The 2009 Kew Gardens 50p marked 250 years of London's Royal Botanic Gardens. Only 210,000 were struck for circulation (the rest came as mint-sealed proof sets), making it the scarcest 50p in everyday use. It's also one of the most faked coins on the BBC's radar — counterfeits appear regularly on online marketplaces.

Genuine features to check

  • Weight: exactly 8.00g ± 0.05g. A kitchen scale accurate to 0.1g is sufficient.
  • Diameter: 27.3mm across the flats of the heptagon.
  • Reeding: the edge is plain (no milling), characteristic of all seven-sided 50ps since 1997.
  • Obverse (heads): 2009 designs use Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse (tails): the pagoda design by Christopher Le Brun with a climbing plant spiralling up the tower. Dated 1759–2009.

Re-issued in 2019

Confusingly, the Royal Mint re-issued the Kew Gardens design in 2019 as part of its "50 Years of the 50p" commemorative set. The 2019 re-issue is not legal tender for circulation and was only sold in sealed presentation packs, so finding one in your change means the original 2009 coin.

2012 London Olympic 50p series

The most celebrated modern UK circulating set: 29 sports-themed 50ps released for the London 2012 Games. A complete collection in brilliant uncirculated condition trades for £150–£250. Only four have mintages below 1.25 million:

  1. Wrestling (Roderick Enriquez) — 1,129,500. The rarest of the 29.
  2. Football (Neil Wolfson) — 1,161,500. The "offside rule" design explains the ruling on the coin itself.
  3. Judo (David Cornell) — 1,161,500.
  4. Triathlon (Jonathan Olliffe) — 1,163,500.

The original Offside-rule 50p was briefly withdrawn in 2011 before reaching circulation and replaced with a corrected version — the withdrawn proof coins from that run are collector pieces worth several hundred pounds. See Wikipedia's 50p overview for the full numismatic history.

How to sell a rare 50p

Getting the best price depends on the coin's value bracket:

  • Under £25: eBay UK auction-format listing runs Wed evening, ending Sunday 8–10pm. Keep the description factual (year, mintage, "UK only" shipping).
  • £25 – £250: BIN-with-best-offer on eBay or a listing via the Royal Mint's trading site. Always photograph both sides on a neutral background.
  • £250+: worth the commission: consign to Baldwin's, Noonans, or Spink. Expect 10–20% buyer's premium on top of hammer.

Whatever route you choose, check our UK coin value checker guide first so you know what a fair offer looks like — then our where-to-sell guide breaks down venue-by-venue commission rates.

Frequently asked 50p questions

Which 50p coin is the rarest?
The 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, with a mintage of just 210,000, is the rarest circulated UK 50p. Verified realised prices on eBay UK sold-listings are typically £150–£250 for circulated examples and £500+ for uncirculated.
Is my 50p rare?
Check the reverse design and year. Low-mintage designs (under 2 million minted) are the ones worth checking: Kew Gardens (2009), Olympic Wrestling (2011), Olympic Football with the offside rule (2011), the Peter Rabbit 2018 set, and the 2019 Paddington Bear series. Use our coin value checker to look up yours.
How much is a 1997 50p worth?
The smaller post-1997 50p in circulated condition is usually worth face value (50p). Exceptions are commemorative designs: the 1998 NHS 50p and 1998 EU Presidency 50p trade at £2–£5 in uncirculated grade.
Where can I sell rare 50ps?
Best realised prices come from eBay UK completed listings (filter by Sold & Auction format) and auction houses like Baldwin's or Noonans for high-value pieces. The Royal Mint Museum and Change Checker publish reference mintage data.
What makes a 50p valuable?
Three factors: mintage (lower = rarer), condition (brilliant uncirculated commands a premium over circulated), and completeness for set coins like the Olympic 29-coin series. Error coins (off-centre strikes, double strikes) can multiply the value.
Are 2012 Olympic 50ps worth money?
Most 2012 Olympic 50ps are worth £2–£3 each in circulated condition. The two standouts are the Wrestling (1,129,500 minted) at £20–£30 and the Football "offside rule" (1,161,500 minted) at £15–£25. A complete 29-coin set in brilliant uncirculated grade can fetch £200+.
