Common questions

How much is the 2017 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2017 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit run from £1.84 to £29.00 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p coins were made?

The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 19,900,000 struck for circulation dated 2017. That is the second highest of the thirteen circulating Beatrix Potter 50p coins, behind only Benjamin Bunny at 25,000,000, and about twice the 9,700,000 of the 2016 Peter Rabbit.

Is the 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p rare?

No. It is the most common of the three circulating Peter Rabbit 50p coins. The Royal Mint's figures give 19,900,000 for 2017 against 9,700,000 for 2016 and 1,400,000 for the 2018 design, which is the scarce one.

How do I tell the 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p from the 2016 and 2018 coins?

The 2017 coin shows Peter Rabbit running and reads THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. The 2016 coin is a close-up portrait reading PETER RABBIT. The year is on the Queen's side of each coin, so check the date as well as the picture.

Who designed the 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p?

Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for the whole Beatrix Potter 50p series. The obverse carries the fifth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

Was there a gold version of the 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p?

Yes. A proclamation made on 19 July 2017 provided for a gold 50p with this design, weighing 15.5 grammes. An earlier proclamation in February 2017 covered the silver and cupro-nickel coins. Neither is part of the circulating mintage.

How do I identify the 2017 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p is the second of the Royal Mint's Peter Rabbit coins. The first, a close-up portrait, was part of the 2016 set for the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth. In 2017 the Mint issued a second group of four Beatrix Potter coins, and the Royal Mint says this Peter Rabbit was the first of them. Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten and Benjamin Bunny completed the year.

The Mint's formal title for the design is The Tale of Peter Rabbit, after Potter's book. A proclamation made on 15 February 2017 fixed all four designs and describes the coins as commemorating her life and work.

The Royal Mint's figures give 19,900,000 struck for circulation. Only Benjamin Bunny, at 25,000,000, is higher among the thirteen circulating Beatrix Potter 50p coins dated 2016 to 2018. It is about twice the 9,700,000 of the 2016 Peter Rabbit and roughly fourteen times the 1,400,000 of the 2018 Peter Rabbit.

Emma Noble designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of Peter Rabbit running, with the inscription THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. The Royal Mint describes him running in his coat, with the title set around the rim.

That makes it easy to separate from the 2016 coin, which is a close-up portrait and reads PETER RABBIT.

The obverse carries the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2017. The value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

Three Peter Rabbit designs were struck for circulation, dated 2016, 2017 and 2018, and their mintages are very different. This is the plentiful one. Listings sometimes describe any Peter Rabbit 50p as the scarce coin, so check the date on the obverse and the reverse design before relying on a description.

Coins from circulation are plain cupro-nickel. The February 2017 proclamation also covered a silver coin, and a second proclamation, made on 19 July 2017, added a gold 50p of the same design. These are collector issues outside the 19,900,000.

It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), remains legal tender and is common in change. The raised figure, especially the ears and the leading foot, takes the first wear.
