History and design
The Paddington at the Station 50p was the first of the Royal Mint's Paddington Bear 50p coins. It was issued in 2018, which the Royal Mint notes was the 60th anniversary of the first publication of Michael Bond's A Bear Called Paddington. Two designs were approved together by a proclamation made on 8 February 2018: this one and Paddington at the Palace.
The Royal Mint's figures give 5,001,000 struck for circulation. That is the lowest of the four Paddington 50p coins. Paddington at the Palace had 5,901,000, and the 2019 pair, Paddington at the Tower and Paddington at St Paul's, had 9,001,000 each.
It is still a large issue. In the same year the Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny 50p coins had 1,400,000 each.
The reverse is by David Knapton. The proclamation describes it as Paddington Bear sitting on a suitcase inside Paddington Station, the place where, in the Royal Mint's words, his British story begins.
The Royal Mint says every detail was considered, from the duffle coat and battered bush hat to the label around his neck, which reads "Please look after this Bear. Thank You."
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018, so the value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin. The label and the texture of the fur are the finest parts of the design, and a label that cannot be read on a coin from change is the result of wear.
It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), remains legal tender, and the Royal Mint describes it as struck for general circulation. Coins from change are plain cupro-nickel.
The Royal Mint sold the design in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in a folder, as a silver proof with a maximum of 75,000 and as a gold proof with a maximum of 1,250. Its companion is the Paddington at the Palace 50p, and the series continued with the Paddington at the Tower 50p.
