History and design
The Team GB 50p was issued in 2016 to support the British team at the Rio Olympic Games. The proclamation that fixed its design, made on 15 March 2016, describes coins "to celebrate Team GB at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games".
In the Royal Mint's figures it is the only Olympic 50p struck for circulation since the 29 sport designs dated 2011, the coins of London 2012. The Royal Mint's own blog made the link at the time, noting that many people were still hunting for those 29 coins and could now add the Team GB coin.
The Royal Mint's figures give 6,400,000 struck for circulation. That is far more than any single coin of the 2011 series, where the highest figure is 3,345,500 for Archery. No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The proclamation provided for gold, silver and silver piedfort versions as well as the cupro-nickel coin, and the Royal Mint's blog said the coin was available in all commemorative finishes. Those collector coins share the design but are not part of the 6,400,000.
This is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g) and remains in circulation. The fine modelling of the swimmer's arms and shoulders and the splashes of water are the highest and most delicate parts of the design, so check those for flattening on a coin from change.
Do not confuse it with the later Team GB 50p for the Tokyo Games, which has no circulating issue in the Royal Mint's figures. Another 2016 commemorative of similar mintage is the Battle of Hastings 50p.
