History and design
The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman forces of Duke William and the English army of King Harold II. In 2016 the Royal Mint marked its 950th anniversary with a 50p. The royal proclamation setting out the design was made on 8 October 2015 and ordered the coin in cupro-nickel, silver and gold.
Collector versions came first, and in September 2016 the circulating coin was expected to reach change later that year. The Royal Mint's figures give 6,700,000 struck for circulation. Seven commemorative 50p designs dated 2016 were struck for circulation, and this one sits in the middle of them: more than Jemima Puddle-Duck (2,100,000), Squirrel Nutkin (5,000,000) and Team GB (6,400,000), fewer than the Beatrix Potter portrait coin (6,900,000), Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle (8,800,000) and Peter Rabbit (9,700,000).
The sculptor John Bergdahl designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a scene from the Bayeux Tapestry depicting King Harold with an arrow in his eye, with the inscription BATTLE OF HASTINGS 1066 and the date of the year. The Royal Mint's launch material spoke of the famous fate of King Harold, with the date taking centre stage.
Bergdahl explained his source plainly: "The Bayeux Tapestry formed the basis for this design, as it is so famous and the only real visual record of the battle."
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE. Because the denomination is on the obverse, the reverse has no value on it. The edge is plain.
Collecting notes
This is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), so it remains legal tender and can still be found in change. Coins taken from circulation will show wear first on the raised parts of Harold's figure and on the numerals of the date.
The same design was sold to collectors in Brilliant Uncirculated form and as silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof coins. The piedfort is struck on a thicker blank. All share the Bergdahl reverse and the Clark portrait.
