Common questions

How much is the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Mrs. Tittlemouse worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Mrs. Tittlemouse run from £4.75 to £9.68 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many Mrs Tittlemouse 50p coins were made?

The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 1,700,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2018. Among Beatrix Potter 50p coins only the 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny, at 1,400,000 each, have a lower circulating figure.

Is the Mrs Tittlemouse 50p rare?

It is one of the scarcer circulating 50p coins. Its 1,700,000 is the third lowest of the thirteen Beatrix Potter coins in the Royal Mint's figures and lower than the 2,100,000 of the 2016 Jemima Puddle-Duck, which is often called the scarcest.

Who designed the Mrs Tittlemouse 50p?

Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for the other Beatrix Potter 50p coins of 2018. The Royal Mint says the design captures the detail of Potter's original illustrations. The Queen's portrait on the obverse is by Jody Clark.

Is the Mrs Tittlemouse 50p still in circulation?

Yes. It is a current-size 50p, remains legal tender and was struck for general circulation. Only 1,700,000 were issued, so it is found in change much less often than the Beatrix Potter coins of 2016 and 2017.

How do I identify the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Mrs. Tittlemouse?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

Mrs Tittlemouse was the last new character in the Royal Mint's run of Beatrix Potter 50p coins made for circulation. The series began in 2016 with five coins for the 150th anniversary of Potter's birth, continued with four in 2017 and ended with four in 2018: Peter Rabbit, Flopsy Bunny, The Tailor of Gloucester and Mrs Tittlemouse. The proclamation for the 2018 designs was made on 13 December 2017, and the Royal Mint scheduled Mrs Tittlemouse to complete the collector series in mid-May 2018.

The Royal Mint's figures give 1,700,000 struck for circulation. Only the 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny, at 1,400,000 each, are lower among the thirteen Beatrix Potter coins in those figures. The Tailor of Gloucester, the fourth coin of the year, had 3,900,000.

That puts Mrs Tittlemouse below the 2016 Jemima Puddle-Duck (2,100,000), the coin most often named as the scarce one of the series.

Emma Noble designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of Mrs Tittlemouse with the inscription MRS TITTLEMOUSE, written without a full stop. It was the first time the character had appeared on an official UK coin, and the Royal Mint says she takes centre stage, with every tiny detail of Potter's original illustrations captured.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018. The value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin. The figure is small and finely detailed, so a worn example loses definition quickly. Softness of that kind is circulation wear.

It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), remains legal tender, and the Royal Mint describes it as struck for general circulation. With 1,700,000 issued it is a coin most people will need to look for.

A silver proof of the same design was sold to collectors, with a maximum of 40,000 set by the Royal Mint. The year's other low-mintage coins are the Flopsy Bunny 50p and the 2018 Peter Rabbit 50p.
