Editorial Policy
How our guides are researched, where the prices come from, and what we do when we get something wrong.
Where the prices come from
Our price data records what coins actually sold for: hammer prices at Spink, Baldwin’s and Noonans, verified eBay UK sold listings, and PCGS and NGC auction records. We do not use dealer asking prices, active listings, catalogue values or estimates, and automated imports are checked nightly for outliers before they reach the grade tables. Price displays use medians, not means, so one anomalous sale cannot distort a figure. The full process, with the current verification statistics, is on the methodology page.
How guides are written and reviewed
- Each guide names its author and reviewer and shows the date it was last substantively changed. That date comes from our version history, not from the day you loaded the page.
- Value ranges in guides are cross-checked against the realised sales in our catalogue before publication. Where a guide states a figure our data does not yet support, it says so and gives the external source instead.
- Mintage figures for frequently misquoted coins are held in a verified list with sources that is checked against the catalogue every night.
- Guides cite primary sources where they exist: the Royal Mint, HMRC, legislation.gov.uk, the Portable Antiquities Scheme, auction archives and the standard numismatic references.
- Legal and tax content describes the rules as published and is not advice. We say so on the page.
Corrections
If a figure, date, attribution or claim on any page is wrong, we correct the page rather than leaving the error to be copied. Corrections that change a stated value or a factual claim are noted on the page. To report an error, use the contact form with the page address and, if you have it, the source that contradicts us; we aim to respond within one business day and to correct confirmed errors within a week.
Affiliate links and advertising
Some guides carry links to eBay and other retailers that pay us a commission on purchases. These are marked, they are placed after the editorial content, and they do not influence which coins we cover, the values we state, or whether we recommend buying at all: several guides advise against the purchase the panel beneath them links to. Display advertising is served by Google and has no editorial input. Full details are in the affiliate disclosure and the advertising policy.
Use of AI tools
We use AI-assisted tools for research, drafting and code. Every published guide is reviewed by the named editor for accuracy against primary sources and our own sales data before it goes live, and the editor is responsible for its contents. We do not publish AI-generated price figures: prices come only from recorded sales. Automatically generated pages, such as the weekly auction round-ups, state that they are generated from the sales database.
Independence
MyCoinage is independently owned and is not affiliated with the Royal Mint, any auction house, grading service or dealer. We buy coins from the public through our selling service; that business is run separately from the editorial guides, which give the same advice on where to sell whether or not that is to us.
