History and design

The Brexit 50p, officially titled Withdrawal from the European Union, marks the United Kingdom's departure from the EU on 31 January 2020. It was released into circulation from that day. The government said about 3 million coins would reach banks, Post Offices and shops from 31 January, with a further 7 million following later in the year, and the Chancellor, Sajid Javid, received the first batch as Master of the Mint.

The coin had a false start. A proclamation made on 8 October 2019 fixed the design with the date 31 October 2019. When the exit date moved, the Treasury confirmed the coins already struck would be recycled, and City A.M. reported from a Treasury response that about one million had been produced. A second proclamation, made on 17 December 2019, substituted 31 January 2020.

The Royal Mint's figures give 10,001,000 struck for circulation, all under 2020. No coin dated 2019 appears in them.

The reverse has no picture. It carries the inscription "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" and the date 31 January 2020. The Royal Mint credits the design to the Royal Mint Engraving Team.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2020. The edge is plain.

Varieties and errors

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin. Coins with the 31 October 2019 date were not issued, and the Treasury said those produced would be melted down. Any coin offered with that date should be treated with great caution.

Collecting notes

Every genuine circulating example reads 31 January 2020 on the reverse and 2020 on the obverse. The design is all lettering, so wear shows first as flattening of the letters and marks in the open field.

It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), remains legal tender and was struck for general circulation. With 10,001,000 issued it still turns up in change.

The 2019 proclamation provided for gold and silver versions for collectors as well as cupro-nickel, and a further proclamation in March 2020 added a gold piedfort with the same design. These are separate from the coin found in change.
