History and design
The Pride 50p marks the 50th anniversary of Pride UK. The first official Pride UK event took place in 1972, and the Royal Mint unveiled the coin in May 2022 as the first UK coin dedicated to Britain's LGBTQ+ community.
It reached circulation later. The Royal Mint confirmed that five million coins would be released through 2,000 Post Office branches from Tuesday 25 October 2022. The coins had been made before the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and the Mint said this would be the last design to enter general circulation with her portrait on the obverse.
The Royal Mint's figures give the mintage as 5,000,000. That is level with the 2016 Squirrel Nutkin 50p and within 70 coins of the 2022 Platinum Jubilee 50p.
The reverse is by Dominique Holmes, described by the Royal Mint as an LGBTQ+ artist and activist. It is a rainbow design. The proclamation describes "elements of the Pride flag accompanied by the inscription PRIDE PROTEST VISIBILITY UNITY EQUALITY" and the figure 50. Protest, Visibility, Unity and Equality are the values of Pride in London.
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE and the date 2022. The edge is plain.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The point that causes most confusion is colour. Coins issued through Post Offices are plain cupro-nickel. The Royal Mint used colour printing only on collector editions: a coloured Brilliant Uncirculated coin, of which its 2022 sales figures record 33,825, and coloured silver proofs. A plain coin from change is correct, and a coloured one is a different product, not a rarer circulating variety.
The same sales figures list 14,428 plain Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 41,113 in trade packaging, with 3,995 coloured silver proofs, 1,446 coloured silver piedforts, 158 gold proofs and 25 gold proof piedforts.
