History and design
King Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023, and the Royal Mint marked the occasion with a 50p issued in two forms. A commemorative range went on sale on 24 April 2023 carrying a crowned portrait of the King made for the Coronation. The Mint said at the time that an uncrowned version would follow into circulation later in the year.
That circulating coin is this one. It began to appear on Thursday 10 August 2023, when the Mint announced that 5 million would go to Post Office and bank branches across the country. The Royal Mint's mintage figures record the same 5,000,000. It was the second 50p to circulate with the King's portrait, after the memorial 50p for Queen Elizabeth II released in December 2022.
In the Royal Mint's figures that is the same mintage as the 2022 Pride 50p, and 25 times the 200,000 Atlantic Salmon 50p coins dated 2023.
The reverse is by Natasha Jenkins, a product designer at the Royal Mint, and was the third of her designs chosen for a UK coin. The proclamation describes it as the King's Royal Cypher set against a section of the exterior of Westminster Abbey. Jenkins said she chose a stylised line drawing of the Abbey because it would be instantly recognisable, with the cypher and crown to mark the King being crowned there. Her initials on the coin are NJ, where her earlier coins were signed NP.
There is no inscription on the reverse. The denomination is on the obverse, which carries the uncrowned coinage portrait by the sculptor Martin Jennings, first unveiled in September 2022, with the King's titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2023. The edge is plain.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The first thing to check is the portrait. A bare-headed King means the circulating coin described here. A King wearing the Tudor Crown means the collector version, which the Royal Mint sold as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin and in silver and gold. The Mint's 2023 sales figures list 92,841 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and a further 92,620 in trade packaging, against the 5,000,000 released for circulation.
Coins were also struck by visitors at the Royal Mint Experience: the Mint records 3,296 on Coronation day and 9,699 between 7 May and 20 August 2023.
This coin was issued through banks and post offices and still turns up in change, so condition is what separates one example from another. The earlier coin of the reign is the memorial 50p of 2022, and the collector version has its own page as the crowned Coronation 50p.
