Common questions

How much is the 2016 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2016 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit run from £1.72 to £8.50 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p coins were made?

The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 9,700,000 struck for circulation dated 2016. That is the highest of the five Beatrix Potter 50p coins of that year, ahead of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle at 8,800,000 and more than four times Jemima Puddle-Duck at 2,100,000.

Is the 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p rare?

No. With 9,700,000 struck it is the most plentiful of the 2016 Beatrix Potter coins. The scarce Peter Rabbit 50p in the Royal Mint's figures is the 2018 design, at 1,400,000. The 2017 design, at 19,900,000, is the most common of the three.

How do I tell the 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p from the later ones?

Check the date on the Queen's side and the reverse. The 2016 coin is a close-up portrait of Peter Rabbit with the words PETER RABBIT. The 2017 coin shows him running and reads THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT.

Who designed the 2016 Peter Rabbit 50p?

Emma Noble, a Royal Mint engraver, designed the reverse, as she did for the other Beatrix Potter 50p coins. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

Is the Peter Rabbit 50p in circulation uncoloured?

Yes. Coins struck for circulation are plain cupro-nickel. The Royal Mint also made a silver version of the design for collectors, which is a separate issue and is not counted in the 9,700,000 circulating mintage.

How do I identify the 2016 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

This is the first Peter Rabbit coin, issued in 2016 as part of the Royal Mint's set of five 50p coins for the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter's birth. It followed the opening coin for the author herself and was the first of the four character coins, ahead of Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin.

Its design was fixed earlier than the other three characters. It shares a proclamation with the Beatrix Potter portrait coin, made on 9 December 2015, while the remaining designs were not proclaimed until March 2016.

The Royal Mint's figures give 9,700,000 struck for circulation, the highest of the five 2016 coins. Peter Rabbit then returned on a new design each year. In the Royal Mint's figures the 2017 coin has 19,900,000 and the 2018 coin only 1,400,000, so the 2016 coin sits between the two. Of the thirteen circulating Beatrix Potter 50p coins dated 2016 to 2018, only three have higher mintages.

Emma Noble, a Royal Mint engraver, designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it simply as a portrait of Peter Rabbit with the inscription PETER RABBIT. The Royal Mint describes a close-up portrait with his whiskers prominently displayed.

That close-up is the quickest way to tell it from the later coins. The 2017 design shows the whole figure running, with the words THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2016. The value and the date are both on the obverse. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

Because three different Peter Rabbit 50p coins were struck for circulation, misdescribed listings are the main thing to watch. Confirm the date on the obverse and match the reverse to the year before treating any example as the scarcer 2018 coin.

Coins from circulation are uncoloured cupro-nickel. The Royal Mint also made a silver version of this design for collectors, and sold a Brilliant Uncirculated coin singly and in a five-coin set. Those are separate issues from the 9,700,000 circulating coins.

This is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g) and still turns up in change. The whiskers and the fur around the face are the first details to flatten with wear.

The later design is the 2017 Peter Rabbit 50p, and the low mintage one is the 2018 Peter Rabbit 50p.
