History and design
The Wallace and Gromit 50p was issued in 2019, 30 years after the pair first appeared on screen. A Grand Day Out, the short film in which they travel to the moon in search of cheese, was first shown on 4 November 1989. The Royal Mint produced the coin with Aardman, the studio behind the characters, and noted that the film also launched their creator, Nick Park.
The coin was a collector issue. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, where the commemorative 50p coins of 2019 are Sherlock Holmes and the two Paddington designs. The Royal Mint's sales figures show 42,251 Brilliant Uncirculated coins sold in packs and 60,499 in tubes.
The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Nick Park and says it was created by Park and the team at Aardman. It shows Wallace and Gromit as if peering from the porthole of the rocket that took them to the moon. On the silver proof the Mint describes the porthole as riveted.

The silver proof, of which 15,085 were sold, is the coloured version: Wallace and Gromit are printed in colour and the coin came in a printed acrylic case. The gold proof sold 624. A cupro-nickel coin with colour is not a Royal Mint product.
