How many Diversity Built Britain 50p coins were made?

10,300,000 were struck for circulation, according to the Royal Mint's mintage figures. The Treasury said around 2.5 million would be released in the first week, in October 2020. Collector versions in Brilliant Uncirculated, silver and gold are counted separately.

Is the Diversity Built Britain 50p rare?

No. At 10,300,000 it has the highest circulating mintage of any commemorative 50p dated 2018 or later in the Royal Mint's figures, just ahead of the 2020 Withdrawal from the European Union coin at 10,001,000. It is common in change.

Who designed the Diversity Built Britain 50p?

Dominique Evans, a coin designer at the Royal Mint. The Treasury said the design was inspired by her own experience growing up as a mixed-race woman. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark.

What does the pattern on the Diversity Built Britain 50p mean?

The background is a geodome, a network of interconnecting lines and triangles. Dominique Evans said each part is equal and symbolises a community of connection and strength. The royal proclamation describes it as a web symbolising the connections between communities across the country.

Is the Diversity Built Britain 50p legal tender?

Yes. The royal proclamation that authorised the coin states that the cupro-nickel 50p is legal tender for the payment of any amount not exceeding ten pounds in any part of the United Kingdom. It circulates alongside every other 50p.

How do I identify the 2020 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Diverse Britain?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel (75% Cu, 25% Ni)) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Diversity Built Britain 50p entered circulation in October 2020, during Black History Month. The Treasury described it as a coin to mark the profound contribution minority communities have made to the shared history of the United Kingdom. The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, commissioned it earlier that year after discussions with the We Too Built Britain campaign, and it was announced as the first in a series.

The Treasury said around 2.5 million coins would be released in the first week. The Royal Mint's figures give a final circulating mintage of 10,300,000. That is the highest of any commemorative 50p dated 2018 or later in the Royal Mint's figures, a little above the 10,001,000 of the Withdrawal from the European Union coin of the same year.

The reverse is by Dominique Evans, a coin designer at the Royal Mint. The Treasury said it was inspired by her own experience growing up as a mixed-race woman. The words DIVERSITY BUILT BRITAIN are set over a geodome, which Evans described as "a series of interconnecting lines and triangles that form a network", adding that "each part is equal, and symbolises a community of connection and strength". The proclamation calls it a web symbolising the connections between communities across the country.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE and the date 2020. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

This is one of the most plentiful modern commemorative 50p coins and it is easy to find in change. The design is made of fine lines, so look for an example where the network of triangles and the lettering are still crisp.

The Royal Mint also sold the design to collectors. Its 2020 sales figures record 39,522 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 25,995 in trade packaging, with 1,415 silver proofs, 609 silver proof piedforts, 73 gold proofs and 78 gold proof piedforts. The precious-metal versions share the design.

The Royal Mint now offers circulated examples itself, noting that they were struck for general circulation and bought back from the secondary market.
