Star Wars 50p Coins: Are They Worth Anything?

A standard Star Wars 50p in its Royal Mint pack sells for £8 to £10, roughly twice what it cost new. The colour version sells for £11 to £30 and the silver proof for £55 to £115. None of the eight coins went into circulation and none is rare in its standard form. Every price on this page is the median of verified eBay UK sold listings from January to October 2026, not an asking price.

2023 R2-D2 and C-3PO 50p. The first of eight Star Wars 50p coins, released on 10 July 2023. The Royal Mint sold 84,244 standard BU coins, the most of any coin in the series.

Are Star Wars 50p coins worth anything?

Yes, but not much more than you paid. The Royal Mint sold the standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin at £4.95 (2023 character coins) and £5.95 (2024 vehicle coins), and the same coin now sells for a median of £7.59 to £9.94 on eBay UK. That is a modest premium for a coin sold in tens of thousands, and it has not moved much across 2026.

The value lives in the other formats. The colour-printed BU coin, sold in smaller numbers (16,505 to 19,647 of each 2023 coin), sells for £11 to £30 depending on the design. The colour silver proof sells for £55 to £115. The gold proof 50p, of which the Mint sold only 95 to 154 of each 2023 coin, has not appeared in our verified sales at all.

The social-media claim that any Star Wars 50p is "worth hundreds" is wrong. If you have one in a Royal Mint card, you have a coin worth about a tenner. If you have a colour or silver version, read on.

Medians with fewer than five sales (several colour and silver columns) are indicative only. Royal Mint sales from its 2023 commemorative coin sales page; release dates from the Royal Mint and Coin Hunter. Each coin page above shows the live figures and every sale behind them.

The first four coins are the character collection, revealed in a streamed event at the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant and authorised by a proclamation of 19 May 2023. The Royal Mint names its product designer Ffion Gwillim as the designer, working from Lucasfilm’s original-trilogy imagery, and its specification credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd. Three carry the date 2023; Han Solo and Chewbacca, released in January 2024, is dated 2024.

The second four are the vehicles collection, which the Mint called Series 2 when it launched the Millennium Falcon on 18 March 2024. All four were authorised together on 23 February 2024 and are dated 2024. The obverse of every coin is Martin Jennings’s portrait of King Charles III.

Which Star Wars 50p is the rarest?

None of the standard coins. The Royal Mint sold 73,739 Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia coins, the lowest 2023 figure. That is a third of the Kew Gardens 50p’s 210,000, but Kew Gardens went into change and most were worn, lost or spent, whereas every Star Wars coin was sold in a pack to someone who meant to keep it. Nearly all 73,739 survive in mint condition. The 2024 figures are not yet published, and the sold-price spread (£7.59 to £9.94) suggests none of them is scarce either.

Scarcity sits in the precious-metal formats:

  • Gold proof 50p. The Mint sold 154 R2-D2 and C-3PO, 99 Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine and 95 Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. The 2024 vehicle coins were limited to 100 each (110 on the TIE Fighter and X-Wing pages). These are the only genuinely rare Star Wars 50p coins.
  • Colour silver proof. 9,526, 7,693 and 7,135 sold of the three 2023 coins; a 7,500 limit on each 2024 vehicle coin. Uncommon rather than rare, and the format that trades most often above £100 (Millennium Falcon £100.47, TIE Fighter £115.10).
  • Colour BU. 16,505 to 19,647 sold of each 2023 coin; a 20,000 limit on each 2024 vehicle coin. The R2-D2 and Death Star II colour coins have sold at about £30.

The Mint also struck each design as a 1 oz silver £2, a 2 oz silver £5, a 5 oz silver £10, a quarter-ounce gold £25 and a 1 oz gold £100. Sales of the 1 oz gold coin were 93, 84 and 67 for the three 2023 designs. Those are separate coins with their own pages and are outside this guide.

Can you find a Star Wars 50p in change?

No. The Royal Mint’s circulating mintage figures list no Star Wars coin, and Coin Hunter records a circulation mintage of 0 for all eight. They were sold from the Mint’s website, singly and by subscription, and through its trade partners in cards and sets. A Star Wars 50p in your change was bought by someone, taken out of its pack and spent, and it is worth the same £6 to £9 as any other loose example.

This matters for the "rare 50p" lists that circulate online. A coin that never entered circulation cannot be a rare find in change, whatever its sales figure. Our rare 50p coins guide ranks the circulating coins that can actually turn up.

BU, colour, silver proof and gold proof explained

All four share the 27.3 mm seven-sided shape and plain edge of every modern 50p. The BU coin is the one most people own; it came in a Royal Mint card, and from distributors in sets and presentation cards (the "trade packaging" in the Mint’s figures, which accounts for two-thirds of 2023 sales). The colour coin has the characters or vehicle printed in colour on the reverse. The silver proof is the same design struck in sterling silver with a mirror field, boxed with a certificate. The gold proof is 22-carat, the same weight as a Stephen Hawking gold 50p, and the only format whose value has a metal floor. See BU vs UNC vs proof for the terms.

What a full set of Star Wars 50p coins sells for

We have not yet verified a sale of a complete eight-coin set, so there is no set median to quote. Bought as singles at their current medians, the eight standard BU coins come to about £71 and the eight colour BU coins to about £158. Treat those as the ceiling for a set listing: a "complete set" asking £120 for eight plain BU coins is charging £50 for the box. Royal Mint set packaging may justify a small premium; a third-party album does not.

If you are buying, the four 2023 character coins and the four 2024 vehicle coins are the natural halves; each half at median is about £34 to £37 in standard BU.

Checking a Star Wars 50p

  • Tilt it. Every Star Wars 50p except the quarter-ounce gold has a lenticular panel on the reverse that switches between two images (Tatooine and the Starbird on R2-D2 and C-3PO; the Falcon and the Starbird on Han Solo and Chewbacca and on the Millennium Falcon; the Empire insignia and the ship on the TIE Fighter and Death Star II; the Rebel crest and the ship on the X-Wing). Both images should be sharp. Scratches here are the first thing a buyer looks for.
  • Weigh it. 8.00 g for the BU, colour and silver proof coins, 15.50 g for the gold proof. Diameter 27.3 mm, plain edge.
  • Check the date. R2-D2, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker coins are dated 2023; Han Solo and all four vehicles are dated 2024. A 2023 Han Solo coin does not exist.
  • Keep the packaging. In the sold data a coin still in its Royal Mint card fetches £1 to £3 more than a loose one, and the box and certificate matter more on the silver and gold proofs.

Fakes are not a practical concern for the base-metal coins; the collector premium is too small to pay for forgery. For a gold proof, buy from a dealer or auction house that will stand behind it, and see how to spot fake British coins.

Frequently asked questions

Are Star Wars 50p coins worth anything?
A little more than they cost. The standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin in its Royal Mint pack sells for £8 to £10 on eBay UK, against an issue price of £4.95 (2023 coins) or £5.95 (2024 coins). The colour-printed version sells for £11 to £30 depending on the design, and the silver proof for £55 to £115. None of the eight is rare in its standard form: the Royal Mint sold between 73,739 and 84,244 of each 2023 coin.
How much is a Star Wars 50p worth?
Medians of verified eBay UK sold listings, January to October 2026, for the standard BU coin: R2-D2 and C-3PO £9.19, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine £8.42, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia £8.37, Han Solo and Chewbacca £7.59, Millennium Falcon £9.94, TIE Fighter £8.44, X-Wing £9.16, Death Star II £9.90. A loose coin that has left its pack sells for £6 to £9.
Which Star Wars 50p is the most valuable?
In the standard BU format the spread is small: the Millennium Falcon and Death Star II lead at a median just under £10, Han Solo and Chewbacca trails at £7.59. The gap opens in the other formats. The Death Star II and R2-D2 colour BU coins have sold at a median of about £30, and the TIE Fighter silver proof at £115. The gold proof 50p coins are the scarce pieces (99, 95 and 154 sold of the three 2023 coins; 100 or 110 the limit on each 2024 vehicle coin), but none has yet appeared in our verified sales.
Were Star Wars 50p coins released into circulation?
No. Every Star Wars 50p was sold by the Royal Mint as a collector coin, and the Royal Mint’s circulating mintage figures list none of them. Coin Hunter records a circulation mintage of 0 for each. A Star Wars 50p in your change was bought, taken out of its pack and spent by someone.
How many Star Wars 50p coins are there?
Eight designs. The character collection has four coins: R2-D2 and C-3PO (released 10 July 2023), Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine (18 September 2023), Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia (13 November 2023) and Han Solo and Chewbacca (15 January 2024, dated 2024). The vehicles collection, which the Royal Mint called Series 2, has four coins all dated 2024: Millennium Falcon (18 March), TIE Fighter (4 May), X-Wing (13 June) and Death Star II (12 July). Release dates are from the Royal Mint and Coin Hunter.
How many Star Wars 50p coins were made?
The Royal Mint publishes sales rather than mintages, and only for 2023-dated coins so far. Standard BU sales, Royal Mint packs and trade packaging combined: R2-D2 and C-3PO 84,244, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine 75,648, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia 73,739. Colour BU: 19,647, 18,133 and 16,505. Colour silver proof: 9,526, 7,693 and 7,135. Gold proof 50p: 154, 99 and 95. For the 2024 coins the Mint’s product pages give limits, not sales: colour BU 20,000, silver proof 7,500 and gold proof 100 for each vehicle coin (the TIE Fighter and X-Wing pages say 20,010, 7,510 and 110). No figures have been published for Han Solo and Chewbacca.
What is the changing picture on a Star Wars 50p?
It is a lenticular feature, a small panel on the reverse that switches between two images as the coin is tilted. The Royal Mint says the R2-D2 and C-3PO coin shows Tatooine and the Rebel Alliance Starbird; Han Solo and Chewbacca and the Millennium Falcon show the Falcon and the Starbird; the TIE Fighter shows the Galactic Empire insignia and a TIE Fighter; the X-Wing shows the Rebel crest and an X-Wing; the Death Star II shows the Empire insignia and the Death Star II. The Mint says the feature is on every edition except the quarter-ounce gold proof, and that the tooling was cut with a picosecond laser.
Is the colour Star Wars 50p worth more than the plain one?
Yes, in every case we have sales for. The colour-printed BU coins sold at a median of £10.66 (Darth Vader), £15.04 (Luke and Leia), £15.08 (Han and Chewbacca), £17.14 (Millennium Falcon), £17.18 (X-Wing), £23.65 (TIE Fighter), £29.30 (R2-D2) and £30.00 (Death Star II), against £8 to £10 for the plain BU. Far fewer were sold: 16,505 to 19,647 of each 2023 colour coin against 73,739 to 84,244 of the plain ones.
How much is a full set of Star Wars 50p coins worth?
We hold no verified sales of a complete boxed set yet. Bought as eight singles at their current medians, a full set of standard BU coins comes to about £71, and that is the sensible ceiling for a set listing unless it includes the Royal Mint collector album or the colour coins. The eight colour BU coins at their medians add up to about £158.
Should I keep a Star Wars 50p in its pack?
Yes. The coins were never meant to be handled, and our sold data shows a loose coin fetching £6 to £9 against £8 to £10 for one still sealed in the Royal Mint card. The lenticular panel scratches easily and buyers check it. Keep the card, the outer sleeve and, for silver and gold proofs, the box and certificate.
Are Star Wars 50p coins legal tender?
Yes. They are UK coins authorised by royal proclamation (the character coins on 19 May 2023, the vehicle coins on 23 February 2024, both published in The Gazette) with a face value of 50 pence. They are also sold in larger silver and gold versions with face values of £2, £5, £10, £25 and £100. Spending one would lose you the collector premium.
