History and design
Paddington at the Palace is the second of two Paddington Bear 50p coins dated 2018. The Royal Mint issued them to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Michael Bond's first book, A Bear Called Paddington. Both designs were approved by a single proclamation made on 8 February 2018, which describes the series as celebrating the literary character Paddington Bear.
The Royal Mint's figures give 5,901,000 struck for circulation, against 5,001,000 for Paddington at the Station. Two more designs followed in 2019, at the Tower of London and at St Paul's Cathedral, with 9,001,000 each, so the Palace coin is the second lowest of the four.
The Royal Mint calls the coin both Paddington at the Palace and Paddington at Buckingham Palace, depending on the page.
The reverse is by David Knapton, who designed all four Paddington 50p coins. The proclamation describes it as Paddington Bear waving a Union Flag outside Buckingham Palace. The Royal Mint says it captured the bear from Darkest Peru on a London adventure, with detail running from his duffle coat to the windows of the Palace.
The Royal Mint made a point of the pairing with the other side: Paddington has his own links to royalty, and here he shares a coin with the Queen. The obverse carries her fifth portrait, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018. The edge is plain.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin. The flag and the Palace windows are fine, shallow detail, and they soften with wear before the figure of Paddington does.
It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), remains legal tender, and the Royal Mint describes it as struck for general circulation.
The Royal Mint sold the design in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in fold-out packaging, as a silver proof with a maximum of 75,000 and as a gold proof with a maximum of 1,250. The first coin of the pair is the Paddington at the Station 50p, and a 2019 follow-up is the Paddington at St Paul's 50p.
