Common questions

How much is the 2016 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Jemima Puddle-Duck worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2016 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Jemima Puddle-Duck run from £6.52 to £70.00 across 6 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p coins were made?

The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 2,100,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2016. That is the lowest of the five Beatrix Potter 50p coins of 2016, less than half the 5,000,000 of Squirrel Nutkin, the next lowest.

Is the Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p the rarest Beatrix Potter 50p?

It is the lowest mintage of the 2016 set, but not of the whole series. Royal Mint figures show three 2018 coins with fewer: Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny at 1,400,000 each and Mrs Tittlemouse at 1,700,000.

Who designed the Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p?

Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for all five Beatrix Potter 50p coins dated 2016. The Royal Mint says it captures the character as she appears in Potter's original illustrations. The Queen's portrait on the obverse is by Jody Clark.

Is the Jemima Puddle-Duck 50p still in circulation?

Yes. It is a current-size 50p and remains legal tender, and the Royal Mint lists it as a circulating coin. With 2,100,000 issued, far fewer were made than of most circulating 50p designs, so it appears in change less often.

How do I identify the 2016 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Jemima Puddle-Duck?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

In 2016 the Royal Mint issued a set of 50p coins for the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter. There were five: a portrait coin for the author and four of her characters, Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin. Jemima was the third coin in the series. The proclamation covering her design, along with Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin, was made on 15 March 2016.

The Royal Mint's figures give 2,100,000 Jemima Puddle-Duck coins struck for circulation. That is the lowest of the 2016 set by a wide margin. Squirrel Nutkin had 5,000,000, the portrait coin 6,900,000, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle 8,800,000 and Peter Rabbit 9,700,000.

It is not the lowest of the whole Beatrix Potter series, although it is often described that way. The 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny coins had 1,400,000 each, and the 2018 Mrs Tittlemouse 1,700,000.

Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for all five of the 2016 coins. The proclamation describes it as a portrait of Jemima Puddle-Duck with the inscription JEMIMA PUDDLE-DUCK. She stands at the centre of the coin, and the Royal Mint says the design faithfully captures the character's gentle and recognisable appearance from Potter's original illustrations.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, showing her in the George IV State Diadem. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2016, so both the value and the date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

This is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g) and remains legal tender, so it can still be found in change. The mintage is small beside the other 2016 Beatrix Potter coins, so it turns up less often than they do.

Coins struck for circulation are cupro-nickel. The 2016 proclamation also provided for a silver version made for collectors, which is a separate issue with its own numbers.

On a coin from change, check the raised parts of the figure, which wear first, and the open field around the figure, which shows contact marks. No mint error or variety is documented, and ordinary wear or damage is sometimes listed online as one.

The other 2016 character coins include the Peter Rabbit 50p and the Squirrel Nutkin 50p.
