Verified sold prices for the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III Millennium Falcon run from £7.25 to £86.19 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
Is the Millennium Falcon 50p in circulation?
No. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures do not include it. The Mint launched it on 18 March 2024 as a collectable coin sold from its website, and Coin Hunter lists it as not struck for circulation. It will not appear in change unless a buyer has spent one.
How many Millennium Falcon 50p coins were made?
The Royal Mint has not published a figure. There is no circulating mintage and no sales data yet for 2024 coins. The standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin had no stated limit, while the colour Brilliant Uncirculated edition was limited to 20,000 and the gold proof to 100.
Who designed the Millennium Falcon 50p?
The Royal Mint's specification credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd., and its launch press release names its own designer Ffion Gwillim. The imagery came from Lucasfilm's official library. The portrait of King Charles III on the obverse is by Martin Jennings.
What does the lenticular feature on the Millennium Falcon 50p show?
Tilting the coin in the light switches a small area of the reverse between a silhouette of the Millennium Falcon and the Starbird symbol of the Rebel Alliance. The Royal Mint says the feature is on every edition except the quarter-ounce gold proof.
Which coins are in the Star Wars vehicles 50p set?
Four, all dated 2024: the Millennium Falcon, the TIE Fighter, the X-Wing and the Death Star II. The Royal Mint called the set Series 2, following its 2023 collection of Star Wars character pairings, and the four designs were authorised by one royal proclamation in February 2024.
How do I identify the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III Millennium Falcon?
Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Millennium Falcon 50p opened the Royal Mint's second Star Wars set, which turned from the character pairings of 2023 to the vehicles of the films. The Mint launched it on Monday 18 March 2024 and said the TIE Fighter, X-Wing and Death Star II would follow during the year. It was the first time a design based on the ship had appeared on a UK coin.
The four vehicle designs were authorised by a royal proclamation that came into force on 22 February 2024. Buyers could order all four on the launch day.
The coin was made for collectors. It is not in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint has not published sales figures for its 2024 coins.
The reverse shows the Falcon in flight, with the inscription STAR WARS. The Royal Mint says the imagery came directly from Lucasfilm's official image library and that the coin was produced with Disney and Lucasfilm. Its specification credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd., while its launch press release names its own designer, Ffion Gwillim.
A lenticular feature, which the Mint describes as tilting in the light to reveal symbols, switches between a silhouette of the Falcon and the Starbird of the Rebel Alliance. The Mint said an advanced picosecond laser was used to put the designs onto the coin-making tools. Every edition has the feature except the quarter-ounce gold proof.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The Royal Mint sold four 50p editions. The standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin had no stated limit. A Brilliant Uncirculated coin with a colour-printed reverse was limited to 20,000, a colour silver proof to 7,500 and a gold proof to 100. These are issue limits, not sales totals.
When checking an example, tilt it to make sure both lenticular images are sharp, and look for handling marks on any coin that has left its pack.
The set also includes the TIE Fighter 50p and the X-Wing 50p.
