History and design
The Harry Potter 50p opened a four-coin collection marking 25 years since Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was first published in the UK by Bloomsbury in 1997. The Royal Mint launched it in 2022 as the first coin of the series, to be followed by the Hogwarts Express, Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts.
The series straddles two reigns. The Royal Mint said the first two coins would carry the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the final two, in 2023, the portrait of King Charles III, making it one of a small number of collections to change portrait part way through.
It was a collector issue. The coin is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint named the Pride 50p as the last design to enter general circulation with the Queen's portrait.
The reverse reproduces the work of Jim Kay, the artist who created the first fully illustrated edition of the book. It was modelled for the coin by Ffion Gwillim at the Royal Mint, who said the aim was to recreate the illustrations faithfully. The proclamation describes "a depiction of Harry Potter with the inscription HARRY POTTER 25 YEARS OF MAGIC".

Two cupro-nickel versions were sold by the Royal Mint: a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin and a colour-printed one. Its 2022 sales figures record 49,590 plain coins, 50,283 more in trade packaging and 34,782 coloured coins. The site lists the coloured coin as a separate entry.
The silver proof 50p is colour-printed and sold 14,784. The gold proof sold 297. Larger silver and gold coins with the same design were struck in other denominations and are different coins.
As none were issued for circulation, an example should be free of circulation wear. The second coin of the series is the Hogwarts Express 50p, the last individual collectable 50p launched with the Queen's portrait.
