History and design
The Han Solo and Chewbacca 50p is the fourth and final coin in the Royal Mint's first Star Wars collection, a set of character pairings issued to mark the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. The first three coins, dated 2023, showed R2-D2 and C-3PO, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, and Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. All four designs were authorised together by a royal proclamation published in May 2023.
The Royal Mint lists this last design under 2024, and Coin Hunter records it going on sale on 15 January 2024. A second Star Wars set, of vehicles, followed two months later.
It is a collector coin. It does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint's published sales figures do not yet reach 2024-dated coins.
The reverse shows the two characters as they appeared in the first film of 1977. The Royal Mint describes Han Solo in his white shirt, black waistcoat and holster belt with his blaster, and Chewbacca towering over him with his bandolier across his chest. Behind them is the exterior of the Millennium Falcon, with its cockpit in view, and the Star Wars logo sits at the base.
The Mint's design list credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd. Its own account says the work was done by its product designer Ffion Gwillim, who handled all four character coins and drew on official imagery supplied by Disney and Lucasfilm.

The Royal Mint offered the design as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin, in colour-printed editions, and as silver and gold proofs. The 50p editions are no longer listed on its website, and no sales figures or limits for them are quoted here.
On any example, tilt the coin to confirm that the lenticular area shows both icons clearly. As the coin never circulated, most examples are still in their packs, and a loose one should be checked for handling marks.
