Most Valuable British Coins
The top 100 British coins ranked by the highest realised auction price across every grade we track. Topped by £349,800, as of 17 September 2026.
Methodology
Every figure on this page is a realised sale: the hammer price (plus buyer's premium where reported) actually paid for that coin in that grade. We aggregate from public auction houses including Spink, Baldwin's and Noonans, plus sold listings from eBay UK. We never publish asking prices, active listings or estimates. Where a coin trades in several grades, the figure shown is the highest realised price across any grade in the past 24 months.
Valuable British coins: common questions
What is the most valuable British coin?
By realised auction price in the MyCoinage data set, the 1839 5 Pounds - Victoria 1st portrait; 'Una and the Lion', which sold for £349,800 (PR-65). Every figure in this ranking is an actual hammer price from Spink, Baldwin's, Noonans or eBay UK sold listings, never an asking price.
What makes a British coin valuable?
Four factors, in roughly this order: rarity (low mintage or few survivors), condition (a top-graded example can realise 10× a worn one), demand (famous designs like the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p outsell scarcer but obscure issues), and precious-metal content, which sets a floor under gold and silver coins. Mintage alone is not enough.
Are any valuable British coins still in circulation?
Yes, at the everyday end of this market. The 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p (mintage 200,000) and 2009 Kew Gardens 50p (mintage 210,000) both circulate and realise £50–£280 depending on grade. The six- and seven-figure coins on this page are auction-room material — patterns, proofs and great rarities that left circulation generations ago.
How do I find out what my own coin is worth?
Use our free coin value checker to identify the coin, then check its page for realised prices by grade. For anything that appears valuable, compare against eBay UK sold listings (not asking prices) before selling.
