Common questions
How much is the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Tailor of Gloucester worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Tailor of Gloucester run from £1.25 to £6.00 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
How many Tailor of Gloucester 50p coins were made?
The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 3,900,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2018. That is the highest of the four Beatrix Potter 50p coins of 2018, more than double the 1,700,000 of Mrs Tittlemouse and the 1,400,000 of Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny.
Is the Tailor of Gloucester 50p rare?
It is less common than most Beatrix Potter coins but the easiest of the 2018 set. Its 3,900,000 is the fifth lowest of the thirteen Beatrix Potter 50p coins in the Royal Mint's circulating figures, below Squirrel Nutkin at 5,000,000.
Why is there a mouse on the Tailor of Gloucester 50p?
The coin does not show the tailor. The Royal Mint says the design features one of the helpful mice from the story, sitting cross-legged on a cotton reel with tiny glasses and a newspaper. The title of the tale is the inscription.
Who designed the Tailor of Gloucester 50p?
Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for the other three Beatrix Potter 50p coins of 2018 and the earlier coins in the series. The fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse is by Jody Clark.
How do I identify the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Tailor of Gloucester?
Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Tailor of Gloucester 50p is one of four Beatrix Potter coins dated 2018, with Peter Rabbit, Flopsy Bunny and Mrs Tittlemouse. They were the third and final year of Beatrix Potter 50p coins made for circulation, a series the Royal Mint launched in 2016 for the 150th anniversary of the author's birth. The proclamation for the 2018 designs was made on 13 December 2017.
The Royal Mint's figures give 3,900,000 struck for circulation. That is the highest of the 2018 set by some distance: Mrs Tittlemouse had 1,700,000, and Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny 1,400,000 each.
It is still a low figure against the earlier years. Every 2017 coin had at least 9,500,000, and of the thirteen Beatrix Potter coins in the Royal Mint's circulating figures only four are lower than The Tailor of Gloucester.
Emma Noble designed the reverse. The coin is named after a tale, not after the animal it shows. The proclamation calls it a depiction of the Tailor of Gloucester with the inscription THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER, but the figure on the coin is not the tailor. The Royal Mint describes it as one of the helpful mice from the story, sitting cross-legged on a cotton reel, complete with tiny glasses and a newspaper.
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018. The value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin. The glasses and the newspaper are the finest parts of the design and the first to blur with wear, so check them on any example taken from change.
It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g), remains legal tender, and the Royal Mint describes it as struck for general circulation. It is the 2018 Beatrix Potter coin most likely to be found in change.
A silver proof of the same design was sold to collectors, with a maximum of 40,000 set by the Royal Mint. The scarcer coins of the year are the Flopsy Bunny 50p and the Mrs Tittlemouse 50p.
