King Charles III ascended the throne on 8 September 2022 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. His coinage portrait, designed by Martin Jennings and depicting the King facing left (opposite to Elizabeth's right-facing direction, per royal tradition), first appeared on a memorial £5 crown in late 2022 and entered circulation through 2023. Charles III's reign has so far been notable for the 50p Atlantic Salmon, at 200,000 mintage, briefly the rarest 50p ever struck.
