History and design
The Megalosaurus 50p is one of three coins in the Royal Mint's Dinosauria Collection of 2020, with Iguanodon and Hylaeosaurus. Megalosaurus has a special place in the story. In 1824 William Buckland, a clergyman and palaeontologist, produced the first scientific description of what became known as a dinosaur, working from fragments of jaw and bone found in Oxfordshire. He named it Megalosaurus, meaning great lizard.
The remains of these three animals later led the anatomist Richard Owen to conclude that they belonged to a distinct group of reptiles, for which he coined the term Dinosauria.
The coin was made for collectors. It is not in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and the Mint's sales figures record 29,037 Brilliant Uncirculated coins plus 77,469 in trade packaging.
The reverse is by the palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, who specialises in anatomically accurate reconstructions of natural history specimens. The Royal Mint says it was designed with the guidance of the Earth Sciences Department of the Natural History Museum. Early depictions gave the animal four legs and a posture like a hippopotamus. It is now understood as a theropod, a large two-legged predator of the Middle Jurassic.
The proclamation describes "a design depicting a Megalosaurus accompanied by the inscription MEGALOSAURUS and BUCKLAND 1824". The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE and the date 2020. The edge is plain.

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
Two cupro-nickel versions exist and both are Royal Mint products. The plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin was sold in packs and through the trade. A colour-printed Brilliant Uncirculated coin was sold only by the Royal Mint, and 27,830 were recorded. The site lists the coloured coin as a separate entry.
Silver proofs were also made with and without colour (7,001 and 2,999 sold), and the gold proof sold 342. As none were issued for circulation, an example should not show circulation wear.
The other coins in the set are the Iguanodon 50p and the Hylaeosaurus 50p.
