History and design
This is the colour-printed version of the RNLI 50p, the coin the Royal Mint struck for the 200th anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 2024. The design was unveiled at the end of 2023 as part of the 2024 Annual Set, and single coins went on sale on 5 February 2024, a month before the anniversary itself on 4 March. The Mint said then that colour editions would be offered alongside the plain coin.
The colour Brilliant Uncirculated coin was a limited edition of 7,500, sold only by the Royal Mint. Five per cent of its price, excluding VAT, went to the RNLI.
Like the standard coin, it was never issued for circulation. The RNLI 50p does not appear in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no sales figures for 2024 coins have been published.
The reverse, by coinage artist John Bergdahl, shows the RNLI flag encircled by a lifebuoy with the inscriptions 200 YEARS and 1824 2024. On this edition the reverse is colour-printed.
Getting the colour right was a job in itself. The Mint said that Thomas Olawuyi of its design team made sure the colour on these coins matched the exact shade of orange associated with the RNLI and its lifeboats. Bergdahl's original was a plaster model, scanned and then refined by product designer Daniel Thorne to fit the 50p.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with his titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.

The Royal Mint sold the colour coin in packaging that covers the history and heritage of the RNLI, and an example is best kept in it. The limit of 7,500 is an issue limit, not a sales total.
Colour also appears on the two silver editions, a silver proof limited to 4,000 and a silver proof piedfort limited to 1,824. Those are silver and proof-finished, so they are not easily confused with this cupro-nickel coin.
