Common questions

How much is the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Flopsy Bunny worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Flopsy Bunny run from £4.74 to £7.14 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many Flopsy Bunny 50p coins were made?

The Royal Mint's mintage figures give 1,400,000 struck for circulation, all dated 2018. The 2018 Peter Rabbit 50p has exactly the same figure, and no other Beatrix Potter 50p in the Royal Mint's circulating figures is lower.

Is the Flopsy Bunny 50p rare?

It is scarce by 50p standards. In the Royal Mint's circulating figures only eight 50p issues have a lower mintage than its 1,400,000, among them the 2009 Kew Gardens coin at 210,000 and four of the 2011 Olympic sports coins.

Who designed the Flopsy Bunny 50p?

Emma Noble designed the reverse, which shows Flopsy facing forward in her little jacket with the inscription FLOPSY BUNNY. Noble designed all four Beatrix Potter 50p coins of 2018. The portrait of the Queen on the obverse is by Jody Clark.

Can you find the Flopsy Bunny 50p in change?

Yes, but not often. It was struck for general circulation and remains legal tender, yet only 1,400,000 were issued, a fraction of the 25,000,000 Benjamin Bunny coins of 2017.

How do I identify the 2018 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Flopsy Bunny?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

Flopsy Bunny was one of four Beatrix Potter 50p coins dated 2018, the third and last year of Beatrix Potter coins in the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures. The others were Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucester and Mrs Tittlemouse. The Royal Mint describes Flopsy as the second coin of that third series, and the proclamation covering the four designs was made on 13 December 2017.

The Royal Mint's figures give 1,400,000 struck for circulation. The 2018 Peter Rabbit has the same figure, and the two share the lowest mintage of any Beatrix Potter 50p in those figures. Mrs Tittlemouse follows at 1,700,000 and The Tailor of Gloucester at 3,900,000.

The fall from the year before is steep: Benjamin Bunny, a character the Royal Mint describes as closely connected to Flopsy, had 25,000,000 in 2017. Across every 50p in the Royal Mint's circulating figures, only eight issues are lower than 1,400,000, among them the 2009 Kew Gardens coin at 210,000.

Emma Noble designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of Flopsy Bunny with the inscription FLOPSY BUNNY. The Royal Mint says she is shown facing forward in her familiar little jacket, drawn from Potter's original illustrations, and links the design to the 1909 tale in which Flopsy and her family set out in search of food.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, wearing the George IV State Diadem. Its inscription reads ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018, so the value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin. The detail of the jacket and the fur is fine and shallow, so it flattens early in circulation. That is wear, not a striking fault.

It is a current-size 50p (27.3mm, 8g) and remains legal tender. The Royal Mint describes it as struck for general circulation, but with 1,400,000 issued it appears in change far less often than the 2016 and 2017 coins.

The same design was sold to collectors as a silver proof, for which the Royal Mint set a maximum of 45,000. It was offered alongside the other three 2018 coins, including the 2018 Peter Rabbit 50p and the Mrs Tittlemouse 50p.
