George III Coins
George III's long 60-year reign covered the founding of modern British coinage as we know it. The 1797 "Cartwheel" two-penny piece (Soho Mint, struck by Matthew Boulton with Watt's steam press) was a watershed in coin manufacture. The Great Recoinage of 1816 introduced the modern shilling, sixpence, half-crown and the 1817 sovereign — the first sovereign since the Tudor era. Post-Recoinage George III silver is the foundation of modern British numismatics.
