History and design
Matthew Boulton struck his second issue of farthings at the Soho Mint under a contract of 1805, with coins dated 1806 and 1807. Wikipedia records that the new farthing was lighter than the 1799 coin because copper had risen in price, and that the denomination was dropped. As with the 1799 issue, proofs were made alongside the currency coins in plain, bronzed and gilt copper.
This is the gilt version. The Royal Mint Museum's example (RMM 1131) weighs 4.8 g and is recorded in the Mint's collection catalogues of 1874 and 1906, and it is catalogued as Peck 1387. Spink describes a gilt proof as from the early period of the Soho Mint. No number struck is recorded.
The obverse shows a laureate and draped bust of George III facing right, the brooch set with seven jewels, with GEORGIUS III. D: G. REX. and the date below. An incuse K on the lowest fold of the drapery marks the work of Conrad Heinrich Küchler, Boulton's engraver.
The reverse has Britannia seated left on a rock holding an olive branch of seven leaves and a trident, with the shield beside her and a ship sailing behind. A raised K sits between trident and shield, SOHO is raised on the rock and BRITANNIA runs above. The edge is grained and the two sides are set upside down to each other.
Collecting notes
Check for the incuse K on the drapery and the raised K and SOHO on the reverse, and count the seven jewels in the brooch and the seven leaves on the branch, which Baldwin's uses in its description. The edge should be grained. Gilt copper can show toning and small marks, as on the Spink example, which was described as practically as struck.
The circulating version, with a mintage of 4,833,768 for 1806 according to Coin Hunter, is the 1806 Soho farthing.
