George VI Coins

1936–1952 · Wartime king

George VI ascended unexpectedly after his elder brother Edward VIII's 1936 abdication. His reign saw two major coinage changes: the 1947 transition from .500 silver to cupronickel for sixpence, shilling, florin and half-crown (silver was needed for the war effort), and the 1949 removal of "IND IMP" from coins following Indian independence. The brass threepence introduced in 1937 remained in circulation throughout his reign.
