George IV Coins

1820–1830 · Pistrucci's Coronation crown

George IV's coinage is dominated by Benedetto Pistrucci's elaborate 1820 Coronation crown — a controversial design that proved unwieldy in practice but is now treasured as a numismatic treasure. The 1821 sovereign carries Pistrucci's St George reverse (still used today on sovereigns). Two distinct portraits were used: a laureate "first head" (1821-1825) and a bare "second head" (1825-1830).
