Edward VIII Coins

1936 (abdicated) · The king without coins

Edward VIII reigned for less than 11 months in 1936 and abdicated before his coinage entered circulation. The Royal Mint had prepared dies for a complete coinage set bearing his portrait — uniquely facing left, breaking the alternating-direction tradition because he preferred his left profile. The pattern coins struck for approval, plus a tiny number of overseas-issued coins (notably for British East Africa and Fiji), are among the most valuable British numismatic items.
