George V Coins

1910–1936 · Silver to cupronickel transition

George V reigned through the First World War and the silver standard's decline. His most significant coinage event was the 1920 reduction of British silver from sterling (.925) to .500 silver — a wartime economy measure that produced the famous "wartime silver" series. The 1933 penny is the most legendary British coin: only seven were struck (for ceremonial foundation-stone purposes) and one auction realisation cleared £100,000.
