The 1806 1 Penny - George III 4th Issue is a collector 1 penny coin issued from 1806 to 1807, struck in gilding metal plated copper. It weighs 18.9g and measures 34mm across. Reverse design: Seated figure of Britannia facing left, with trident in left hand, olive branch in raised right hand, shield bearing Union flag resting at left, sea behind with ship to left,.

It is no longer legal tender (withdrawn 1869), so its value is to collectors only.

History and design

When Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint struck the new, lighter pennies of 1806 and 1807, it also made proofs of the design in several finishes. The Royal Mint Museum holds 1806 proof pennies in copper, bronzed copper and copper gilt, the last weighing 18.94 g.

The gilt proofs were never money. They differ from the 19,355,480 currency pennies of 1806 in finish and striking, and in the Royal Mint Museum's examples the dies are aligned medal fashion, whereas the currency coins are aligned coin fashion. No figure for the number of gilt proofs is published.

The design is the one Conrad Heinrich Küchler engraved for the currency penny. The obverse shows a small laureate and draped bust of George III facing right, with GEORGIUS III D: G REX around, the date below and Küchler's K on the truncation. Baldwin's describes its early Soho gilt piece with beaded borders on both sides, wide outer rims and a brooch with nine jewels on the King's drapery.

The reverse shows Britannia seated left, resting on her shield with trident and olive branch, a ship under sail behind, and BRITANNIA around. The edge is grained in a deep groove, which the Royal Mint Museum calls engrailed.

Varieties and errors

Dealers and catalogues divide the Soho proofs into early Soho and late Soho strikings. Baldwin's catalogues its gilt piece as early Soho, Peck 1321, the same Peck number as the Royal Mint Museum's gilt proof.

Collecting notes

Check that the gilding is original and even, with no wear through to copper on the high points, and that the fields and rims show proof quality. A gilded currency penny will lack the sharp strike and, judging by the museum examples, will have coin-fashion die alignment. The circulating version is the 1806 penny.
