Common questions

How much is the 1928 2 Pence - George V 3rd Maundy issue worth?

The 1928 2 Pence - George V 3rd Maundy issue has a price in one grade on MyCoinage so far: £29.30 in VF, the median of its verified sales.

Which George V Maundy twopence has the lowest mintage?

1936, with 1,365 in Coinstrail's catalogue, against 1,706 to 2,066 for the other years of this type. 1936 was the year of George V's death, and Wikipedia records that Edward VIII made the Maundy distribution that year.

Did George V give out Maundy money himself?

Once, in 1932. Wikipedia says his cousin Princess Marie Louise suggested it after attending in 1931, and that it was the only time he was at the service. Tony Clayton notes it was the first personal presentation by a monarch since the 17th century.

What silver is the 1928 to 1936 Maundy twopence?

It is .500 silver. Wikipedia and Tony Clayton record that Maundy money followed the circulating silver coins down from sterling in the early 1920s and went back to .925 silver only in 1947, when the ordinary coins became cupro-nickel.

Is a George V Maundy twopence still legal tender?

Technically yes. Maundy coins are legal tender, and the Royal Mint Museum records that at decimalisation in 1971 their face values changed from old to new pence, so this twopence now counts as 2p. They do not circulate.

How do I identify the 1928 2 Pence - George V 3rd Maundy issue?

Check the weight 0.94g and diameter 13mm and the metal (50% silver) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The twopence is the second of the four Maundy coins handed to recipients at the Royal Maundy on the day before Good Friday. The Royal Mint Museum explains that the white purse holds silver Maundy coins totalling as many pence as the sovereign's age, and that there are as many men and as many women recipients as he has years.

Coinstrail's catalogue gives 1,706 twopences for 1928 and between 1,862 and 2,066 in each year from 1929 to 1935, the peak coming in 1933. 1936 fell to 1,365. Wikipedia records two notable services in this period: in 1932 George V made the distribution in person for the only time in his reign, at the suggestion of Princess Marie Louise, and in 1936, the year of his death, Edward VIII made it.

The obverse carries Bertram Mackennal's bare head of George V facing left, the portrait the Royal Mint Museum credits to him. Tony Clayton's tables show it in two forms on these coins: a modified effigy for 1928 and 1929, and an obverse modified again from 1930 to 1936.

The reverse is the crowned figure 2 with the date inside an oak wreath. Wikipedia credits the wreathed design to Jean Baptiste Merlen in 1822 and the 1888 redrawing of the crown and the 2 to Leonard Charles Wyon. The coins are .500 silver.

Varieties and errors

The two obverses noted by Clayton are the only recorded distinction within this type. No mint errors are documented.

Collecting notes

Clayton records that Maundy sets have been issued only to recipients and those involved in the ceremony since 1909, so George V sets are much scarcer than Victorian ones, and the four coins of a year are not always equally easy to find singly. A full date run of this type needs both obverse versions.

Maundy coins remain legal tender, counted in new pence since 1971. The 1928 to 1936 Maundy penny is the matching smallest coin of these sets.
