Common questions

How much is the 1911 3 Pence - George V 1st issue – incl. Maundy worth?

Verified sold prices for the 1911 3 Pence - George V 1st issue – incl. Maundy run from £6.01 to £74.09 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one. Its silver content is worth about £1.67 at today's spot price, which puts a floor under its value.

How do I tell a Maundy threepence from an ordinary 1911 to 1920 threepence?

Often you cannot. Wikipedia and Tony Clayton both say the currency and Maundy threepences of this period share one design, and only the higher striking quality of the Maundy coins in the best condition separates them. Clayton adds that Maundy coins rarely turn up worse than very fine, so worn coins are almost certainly currency pieces.

How many George V sterling threepences were made?

Coin Hunter gives 128,499,236 currency threepences for 1911 to 1920, from 5,450,617 in 1915 to 21,662,490 in 1917. Coinstrail adds between 982 and 1,991 Maundy threepences a year. Its own totals are slightly higher because they include the Maundy coins.

Is a 1920 threepence sterling or .500 silver?

It can be either. The Royal Mint Museum says .500 silver was first struck in April 1920, and Wikipedia notes that some threepences dated 1920 were struck in sterling silver and the remainder in the debased alloy. Both versions are catalogued, the .500 coin as the next type.

Is a George V silver threepence legal tender?

Wikipedia states that at decimalisation in 1971 all silver threepences from 1870 onwards were revalued at three new pence, and Tony Clayton says the same of silver threepences of the Maundy design. They do not circulate.

How do I identify the 1911 3 Pence - George V 1st issue – incl. Maundy?

Check the weight 1.41g and diameter 16mm and the metal (92.5% silver) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

George V's first threepence continued the small sterling silver coin that had circulated since 1845 alongside the Maundy threepence. The Royal Mint Museum notes that the threepence had earlier survived mainly as part of the Maundy money, and that its role changed when it was issued in large numbers for circulation, helped by the inconvenient size of the copper coins.

Coin Hunter records 5,841,084 currency threepences for 1911 and 128,499,236 over 1911 to 1920. Output rose sharply in wartime: from 5,450,617 in 1915, the lowest date, to 18,555,201 in 1916 and 21,662,490 in 1917. The Royal Mint Museum explains that the disappearance of gold during the war drove a huge increase in demand for silver coin. Coinstrail adds between 982 and 1,991 Maundy threepences a year, struck for the white purses at the Royal Maundy.

The type ended with the Silver Coinage Act 1920, which cut British silver from .925 to .500.

The obverse is Bertram Mackennal's bare head of George V facing left, his initials BM on the truncation, with the legend GEORGIVS V D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP. The reverse is a crowned figure 3 with the date in an oak wreath. Wikipedia attributes the wreathed design to Jean Baptiste Merlen in 1822, with the crown altered in 1888 by Leonard Charles Wyon.

Varieties and errors

The circulating and Maundy coins are of the same design. Tony Clayton and Wikipedia say they can usually be told apart only in the best condition, by the sharper strike of the Maundy pieces. Clayton also lists a 1911 proof. No mint errors are documented.

Collecting notes

Clayton notes that Maundy coins are rarely found in worse than very fine condition, so a worn example is almost certainly a currency piece. Check 1920 threepences carefully: Wikipedia records that only some were struck in sterling, the rest in the new .500 alloy, which is catalogued as the second George V threepence. Wikipedia says all silver threepences from 1870 were revalued at three new pence in 1971.
