Bertram Mackennal

1863–1931 · Sculptor; designer of George V coinage

Australian sculptor who designed the obverse portrait of George V, used on UK circulating coinage from 1911 to 1936. Mackennal's portrait shows a sober, soldierly profile — the only UK monarch coinage to be made entirely by an Australian artist. His George V coinage spans the era of sterling-to-cupronickel transition (silver coins moved to .500 alloy in 1920) and the famous 1933 penny.
