The 1927 1 Florin - George V 3rd issue is a circulating 1 florin coin issued from 1927 to 1936, struck in 50% silver. It weighs 11.3g and measures 28.5mm across. Reverse design: Cruciform crowned sceptres around central G, shields of England, Scotland and Ireland in angles, legend above, date and denomination below.

Mintage figures are recorded for 8 years between 1928 and 1936, 66,634,300 coins in all. 1932 is the scarcest date, with 717,000 struck. It is no longer legal tender (withdrawn 1993), so its value is to collectors only.

History and design

Robert Johnson, Deputy Master of the Royal Mint from 1922, wanted to replace the unimaginative heraldic designs of the early reign. The Royal Mint Museum records that new reverses by George Kruger Gray were approved by the King in 1927, and a proclamation of 3 November 1927 set them for the crown, half crown, florin, shilling, sixpence and threepence from 1 December that year.

A full set dated 1927 appeared only as proofs, which went on sale in December 1927, timed for Christmas; the museum says at least 10,000 sets had sold by the year's end. Circulating florins of the new design began in 1928. The coins remained .500 silver throughout.

Coin Hunter's figures give 66,634,702 for the eight circulation dates. None was struck in 1934, and 1932 stands out with only 717,041, the lowest of any George V florin. The other dates ran from about 5.75 million to 16.4 million.

The proclamation describes the reverse as the King's initial in the centre, interlaced by four crowned sceptres in the form of a cross, with the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom in four shields in the angles, FID DEF IND IMP, ONE FLORIN and the date. Wikipedia notes that this kept the old shields and sceptres but moved the crowns from the shields to the sceptres. TreasureRealm records Kruger Gray's initials, K and G, separated at the foot of the design.

The obverse is Bertram Mackennal's bare head, slightly modified in 1927 according to Wikipedia, with the shorter legend GEORGIVS V DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX. The titles FID DEF IND IMP moved to the reverse. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

The 1932 florin is the key date. Tony Clayton also lists rare proofs dated 1928 to 1936 alongside the 1927 proof. No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this type.

Wikipedia notes that George VI's florin replaced this design with a crowned rose. The 1920 to 1926 florin is the type before this one. Like all florins, these were withdrawn when the old-sized 10p ceased to be legal tender at the end of June 1993.
