Until 1927 the currency and Maundy threepences shared the same crowned 3 reverse. Tony Clayton notes that in 1927 the currency coin moved to an oak sprig design while the Maundy threepence kept the crowned numeral, so the later crowned 3 coins of the reign are all Maundy pieces.
Is a silver threepence still legal tender?
Tony Clayton says silver threepences of the Maundy design were revalued at three new pence at decimalisation in 1971, and Wikipedia says the same of all silver threepences from 1870 onwards. That covers these coins, though none would be spent at face value.
How many Maundy threepences were struck?
Very few. CoinVarieties, drawing on the Krause and Spink catalogues, records 1,887 Maundy threepences for 1934 and 1,307 for 1936. It adds that because Maundy coins were kept by their recipients, they are not rare despite the small numbers.

History and design
This entry brings together the crowned 3 threepences that carry George V's modified portrait. The first is the 1926 currency threepence. CoinVarieties records that the bust was reduced in size that year, and Tony Clayton lists the 1926 modified obverse as a separate type. Coin Hunter's figure of 4,107,910 for 1926 covers both portraits, so the modified coin's own mintage is not known.
The rest are Maundy coins. Until 1927 the currency and Maundy threepences were the same design, Clayton explains, with depth of striking the best clue between them. In 1927 the currency coin changed to an oak sprig reverse, while the Maundy threepence kept the crowned 3. Clayton's Maundy table gives the modified effigy from 1928 and a re-engraved effigy from 1930. CoinVarieties records 1,887 Maundy threepences for 1934 and 1,307 for 1936.
All are 0.500 silver, the standard since the Silver Coinage Act of 1920.
The obverse is Bertram Mackennal's portrait of George V facing left, in its modified form, with GEORGIVS V D G BRITT OMN REX F D IND IMP. The Royal Mint Museum notes that Mackennal's original portrait was technically unsuited to coinage, and CoinVarieties says the earlier bust made a full strike hard to obtain.
The reverse is a crowned 3 dividing the date within an oak wreath. Wikipedia credits the design to Jean Baptiste Merlen in 1822, with the crown revised by Leonard Charles Wyon in 1888.
Varieties and errors
Clayton separates the 1928 to 1929 modified effigy from the 1930 to 1936 re-engraved effigy on the Maundy coins. No mint errors are documented.
Collecting notes
For a 1926 currency coin, check the portrait. TreasureRealm explains, for the larger silver coins, that the modified effigy has a border whose beading reaches further in and a different placing of the BM initials. The Maundy coins are usually sold in four-coin sets, and Clayton notes they seldom turn up in worse than VF. The oak sprig threepence is the currency coin of 1927 to 1936.
