The 1927 6 Pence - George V 4th coinage is a circulating 6 pence coin issued from 1927 to 1936, struck in 50% silver. It weighs 2.83g and measures 19.3mm across. Reverse design: Three oak sprigs with six acorns, denomination above, date below.

Mintage figures are recorded for 9 years between 1928 and 1936, 164,576,800 coins in all. 1934 is the scarcest date, with 9,304,000 struck. It is no longer legal tender (withdrawn 1980), so its value is to collectors only.

History and design

In the 1920s the Deputy Master of the Royal Mint, Robert Johnson, wanted to refresh the heraldic designs on the silver coins. The Royal Mint Museum records that he set up the Royal Mint Advisory Committee in 1922, and in 1927 new reverse designs by the artist George Kruger Gray were approved by the King. A proclamation of 3 November 1927 set them out, taking effect from 1 December 1927.

The full new series dated 1927 appeared only in that year's proof sets, which went on sale in December 1927. Tony Clayton, Coin Hunter and CoinVarieties all say the 1927 oak sixpence is a proof, with 15,000 given by the last two. Circulation coins followed from 1928 to 1936 in 0.500 silver. Coin Hunter and Wikipedia agree on every date, about 164.6 million in all, from 28,319,326 in 1929 down to 9,304,009 in 1934.

The proclamation describes the reverse as six acorns growing from interlaced oak branches, with the words SIX PENCE and the date. Tony Clayton reads the layout as SIXPENCE above and A date D below. TreasureRealm notes that Kruger Gray's initials KG sit in the very centre of the coin, surrounded by the acorns and oak sprigs.

The obverse is Bertram Mackennal's bare head of George V facing left, with GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:, so the King's full titles moved to the obverse once the reverse no longer carried FID DEF IND IMP. The proclamation specifies a grained (milled) edge.

Collecting notes

Clayton says the type has no scarce dates; 1932 and 1934 have the lowest mintages. A 1927 with the oak reverse should be a proof from the 1927 set. The circulating 1927 sixpence is the lion on crown modified effigy coin. No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this type.

These were the last George V sixpences. Like all sixpences they stayed legal tender as 2.5 new pence after decimalisation, until 30 June 1980.
