Christopher Ironside

1913–1992 · Designer; decimal reverses 1968–1971

British painter and designer of the original decimal coin reverses — 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p — introduced for Decimal Day in 1971. Ironside's portcullis £1 reverse (1983) and seated Britannia 50p (1969–2008) defined British change for nearly four decades. His 50p Britannia was retired in 2008 when Matthew Dent's Royal Shield reverses were introduced, but it returned in 2013 onwards as the standard 50p reverse.
