British painter, former President of the Royal Academy, and designer of the most famous modern UK coin: the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p. His pagoda design — celebrating 250 years of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew — was struck for circulation with a mintage of just 210,000, the lowest of any 50p until the 2023 Atlantic Salmon. The Kew Gardens 50p singlehandedly created the modern UK 50p collecting craze.
