Stephen Taylor

contemporary · Public-competition designer; 2011 Olympic Football 50p

British amateur designer whose design for the 2011 Olympic Football 50p won a Royal Mint public competition for the London 2012 Games series. Taylor's reverse depicts a diagram of the offside rule — possibly the most-discussed coin design in modern British history. The Football 50p has the lowest mintage of the entire Olympic 29-coin set at 1,125,500, partly because the design was produced last. The "offside rule" 50p became iconic as a piece that explained an obscure rule to a generation of UK collectors.
