Common questions

How much is the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III X-Wing worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III X-Wing run from £7.07 to £9.16 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

Is the X-Wing 50p in circulation?

No circulating issue is recorded. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the Star Wars vehicles coins were launched as collectable coins sold through the Mint's website. Any X-Wing 50p in change was spent by someone who had bought it.

How many X-Wing 50p coins were made?

No figure has been published for the standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin. The Royal Mint's product pages give maximum coin mintages of 20,010 for the colour Brilliant Uncirculated coin, 7,510 for the silver proof and 110 for the gold proof. These are limits, not confirmed sales.

Who designed the X-Wing 50p?

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd. and says it uses imagery sourced from Lucasfilm's official image library, in collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm. It names no individual designer. Martin Jennings designed the portrait of King Charles III on the obverse.

What does the lenticular feature on the X-Wing 50p show?

The Royal Mint says the panel on the reverse displays the crest of the Rebel Alliance and the outline of the X-Wing, changing as the coin is tilted. It does not show the Galactic Empire insignia, which belongs to the TIE Fighter coin in the same series.

How do I identify the 2024 50 Pence - Charles III X-Wing?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The X-Wing 50p is the third of four 2024 coins in the Royal Mint's Star Wars vehicles series, after the Millennium Falcon and the TIE Fighter and before the Death Star II. When the Mint launched the series on 18 March 2024 it said the vehicles were appearing on official UK coins for the first time. The coins are licensed products made in collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm.

The Mint describes the X-Wing as the signature starfighter of the Rebel Alliance and the crown jewel of its fleet, shown as it appears in the original film trilogy.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures list no commemorative 50p dated 2024, and the series was launched as collectable coins sold through the Mint's website. No mintage has been published for the standard base metal coin.

The Mint credits the reverse to Lucasfilm Ltd., using imagery from Lucasfilm's official image library. It shows the X-Wing in flight with its S-foils open in a saltire, the familiar X shape. The proclamation gives the design as a depiction of an X-Wing with the inscription STAR WARS.

A lenticular feature on the reverse changes as the coin is tilted. On this coin the Mint says it displays the crest of the Rebel Alliance and the outline of the X-Wing, where the TIE Fighter coin shows the Galactic Empire insignia.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The standard coin was sold by the Mint as a Brilliant Uncirculated coin, singly or through a subscription to all four coins of the series. Because it was not issued for circulation, examples normally survive in Mint packaging. On a loose coin, look at the lenticular panel under a light and check it for scratches or handling marks.

A colour-printed Brilliant Uncirculated version, sold only by the Mint, has a maximum coin mintage of 20,010. The Mint's pages give maximum mintages of 7,510 for the silver proof 50p and 110 for the gold proof 50p, both with the same lenticular feature.

The neighbouring coins in the series are the TIE Fighter 50p and the Death Star II 50p.
