Krugerrand Value UK: What Is a Krugerrand Worth?

A 1 oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, so it is worth the gold price: about £3,126 at today’s spot of £3,126/oz. Dealers sell a little above that and buy back a little below it. Smaller Krugerrands hold a half, a quarter or a tenth of an ounce.

In brief. Gold value = gold content × spot. 1 oz Krugerrand ≈ £3,126 today. No VAT when you buy. Not UK legal tender, so not automatically free of Capital Gains Tax, though a single coin sold for under £6,000 is exempt as a personal possession.

Gold values use the live gold spot price (£3,126/oz, 8 October 2026) and update daily. They are the value of the gold, not a dealer quote. Smaller coins cost more per gram to make, so fractional Krugerrands usually sell at a higher premium over their gold value than the 1 oz coin.

What a Krugerrand is

The Krugerrand is South Africa’s gold bullion coin, first struck in 1967. It shows Paul Kruger on one side and a springbok on the other, and it carries no face value in rand: the coin’s value is its gold. It is struck in 22 carat gold (91.67% gold, 8.33% copper), which is why a 1 oz coin weighs 33.93 g rather than 31.10 g. The half, quarter and tenth ounce sizes followed in 1980.

Selling a Krugerrand in the UK

  1. Work out the gold value. Use the table above, or multiply the pure gold in ounces by today’s spot.
  2. Get buy-back quotes. UK bullion dealers publish live buy-back prices for Krugerrands. Compare two or three on the same day, since the gold price moves hourly.
  3. Check the coin. Krugerrands are widely faked. A genuine 1 oz coin weighs 33.93 g and measures 32.77 mm. Our specific gravity test catches most plated fakes.
  4. Think about tax. See the Capital Gains Tax answer below, especially if you are selling several coins together.

VAT and Capital Gains Tax

Krugerrands are investment gold, so they are VAT free to buy in the UK. Capital Gains Tax is different. Sovereigns and gold Britannias are UK legal tender and exempt from CGT outright. Krugerrands are not, so any exemption comes from the personal possessions rule: HMRC does not tax a gain on a possession sold for under £6,000, but matching items sold together can count as one set. Above that, gains beyond the £3,000 annual exempt amount are taxed at 18% or 24%.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Krugerrand worth in the UK today?
A 1 oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold, so its gold value is the gold spot price: about £3,126 at £3,126/oz (8 October 2026). Dealers sell slightly above that figure and buy back slightly below it, so the amount you are offered depends on the dealer’s buy-back price on the day.
How much gold is in a Krugerrand?
One troy ounce (31.10 g) of pure gold. The coin weighs 33.93 g because it is 22 carat: 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper, which makes it harder wearing than pure gold. The 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Krugerrands contain those fractions of an ounce of pure gold.
Do you pay Capital Gains Tax on Krugerrands in the UK?
Possibly. Krugerrands are not UK legal tender, so unlike sovereigns and Britannias they are not automatically exempt from Capital Gains Tax. HMRC treats coins as personal possessions, and a possession sold for less than £6,000 is exempt. Matching items sold as a set can be treated as one item, and gains above the £3,000 annual exempt amount are taxed at 18% or 24%. Check your own position with an accountant before selling a large holding.
Is there VAT on Krugerrands?
No. Krugerrands count as investment gold in the UK, so they are sold free of VAT. See our VAT on gold and silver coins guide for the rules.
Are old Krugerrands worth more than new ones?
Usually not. The Krugerrand is a bullion coin, first issued in 1967, and ordinary dates trade on their gold content whatever the year. Proof strikes and some low-mintage issues can carry a collector premium, but most Krugerrands are valued by weight of gold.
Is a Krugerrand better than a sovereign for a UK buyer?
It depends on how much you hold and for how long. A sovereign is UK legal tender and exempt from Capital Gains Tax outright. A Krugerrand puts a full ounce in one coin and is recognised by dealers worldwide. Our sovereign vs Krugerrand comparison covers the trade-off.
