History and design

The Jubilee portrait of 1887 was widely mocked, and after Boehm's death in 1890 a Committee on the Design of Coins chose a new obverse by Sir Thomas Brock. Wikipedia's Old Head coinage article records that the committee kept Pistrucci's St George on the crown, and the new coins were proclaimed on 30 January 1893 to a much warmer reception.

Coin Hunter gives 497,845 crowns for 1893, falling to 144,906 in 1894, the lowest date of the type, then between about 166,000 and 354,000 a year to 1900. That is just over 2.1 million in eight years, about half the Jubilee crown's output in six.

Brock's portrait shows an older Queen in a small diadem partly hidden by a widow's veil, with the Garter star on her mantle and TB under the truncation. She sat for no new likeness; Brock worked from photographs, and George William de Saulles reduced the model to coin-size hubs under his supervision. The legend reads VICTORIA DEI GRA BRITT REGINA FID DEF IND IMP. These were the first British coins to carry IND IMP, Empress of India, after the cabinet agreed in 1892 that the title could appear because the coins also circulated in the colonies.

The reverse is Pistrucci's St George on horseback slaying the dragon, with the date below. The edge returned to the old lettering DECUS ET TUTAMEN, "an ornament and a safeguard", followed by the regnal year in Roman numerals.

Varieties and errors

Because Victoria's reign began in June 1837, the regnal year changed part way through each calendar year. Every date from 1893 to 1900 therefore exists with two edge years, from LVI and LVII in 1893 to LXIII and LXIV in 1900. Clayton lists both for each date. Proofs dated 1893 with the LVI edge were sold in the proof sets of the new coinage.

Collecting notes

Read the edge before anything else: an Old Head crown is collected by date and regnal year, so a full set has sixteen coins. Check the edge lettering is complete and not filed or damaged, and look for wear on St George's thigh and the Queen's veil.

The design follows the Jubilee Head crown of 1887 to 1892, which had a milled edge. Wikipedia, citing the Royal Mint Museum, states that crowns from 1818 onwards remain legal tender at 25p.
