History and design
In 1847 the government agreed to test public opinion on decimal coinage with a two-shilling piece worth one tenth of a pound. Wikipedia records that names including centum, decade and dime were discussed before florin was settled on. During 1848 the Mint struck a range of trial pieces: the Royal Mint Museum holds a dozen pattern florins dated 1848, and its records refer to Mint papers approving a series of patterns that year.
This piece is one of the rejected designs. The coin actually issued in 1849 had a crowned bust and crowned shields in a cross, and became known as the Godless florin.
A Christie's catalogue describes the obverse as a young laureate bust of the Queen facing left, with the date below. The reverse carries the royal cypher VR, interlinked with a rose, thistle and shamrock with small leaves, and the Prince of Wales's plumes with their motto, all within a quatrefoil, with ONE FLORIN TWO SHILLINGS around. The two sides are aligned like a medal, and the edge is plain.
Collecting notes
These patterns were never issued, and no mintage is recorded. The Royal Mint Museum's example (RMM 3962, ESC 896) weighs 11.24 g with a plain edge. A closely related pattern with a ribbon in the Queen's hair instead of a laurel wreath is listed separately as the ribbon-head 1848 pattern florin. The design that was adopted is the 1849 Godless florin.
