History and design
The five-pound piece, worth five sovereigns, had been struck for circulation only in 1887 and 1893 before Edward VII's reign. A proclamation dated 10 December 1901, in force from 1 January 1902, set its new design, and the coin was issued in 1902 both at face value and in the proof sets for the coronation. Wikipedia records that few of the circulation coins were actually used.
Coin Hunter gives 34,910 currency coins and 8,066 matt proofs, in 22 carat gold. A small number were also struck at the Sydney Mint. It was the last £5 made for circulation: George V's 1911 coin was a proof only.
The obverse carries George William de Saulles's bare-headed portrait of the King facing right, with his initials De S below the neck. The proclamation gives the full legend EDWARDVS VII DEI GRA BRITT OMN REX FID DEF IND IMP, which Wikipedia translates as "Edward VII, by the grace of God king of all the Britains, defender of the faith, emperor of India".
The reverse is Benedetto Pistrucci's St George, armed and on horseback, attacking the dragon with a sword, with a broken spear on the ground and the date in the exergue. Wikipedia notes the Mint chose to make as few changes as possible to the coinage, so Pistrucci's reverse continued. The edge is milled.
Varieties and errors
Matt proofs were struck for the 13-coin coronation set. The Sydney coins are marked by a small S in the ground above the date, according to Tony Clayton. No recognised mint errors are documented.
Collecting notes
MJ Hughes Coins describes the matt finish as a textured, etched or sandblasted, low-reflective surface, which separates a proof from a lustrous currency coin. Check any example for an S above the date.
Only the long coronation set contained the £5 and £2, so a matt proof £5 may have left its set. The coin remains legal tender, according to Wikipedia. The 1902 double sovereign is its smaller companion.
