History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Dennis the Menace. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Dennis the Menace 50p was launched by the Royal Mint on 19 February 2026, in collaboration with Beano, to mark 75 years of the character. The Mint's press release dates his first appearance to 17 March 1951, in issue 452 of the comic. Beano itself was first published by DC Thomson on 30 July 1938 and is described by the Mint as Britain's longest-running weekly comic.

The Royal Mint calls this the first UK coin of its kind to celebrate Dennis. It was announced as a collectable 50p, on sale through the Mint's website from 9am on launch day. No release to banks or post offices has been announced, the Mint's circulating mintage data lists no such coin, and no sales figure for the base-metal coin has been published.

The reverse is credited to Beano Studios. The royal proclamation describes it as "a depiction of the Beano character Dennis with his dog Gnasher accompanied by the inscription 75 YEARS OF DENNIS and the Beano logo". The Mint's own description picks out Dennis's striped jumper and has Gnasher at his side.

The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2026, so the denomination sits on the King's side. The edge is plain.
