History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Diplodocus. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Diplodocus 50p closes the Royal Mint's three-coin collection of 2024 built around famous dinosaur specimens, following the Tyrannosaurus and the Stegosaurus. The Mint announced the set with the Natural History Museum on 14 December 2023 as a series of collectable 50p coins, and Coin Hunter records the Diplodocus going on sale on 14 March 2024.

The subject was chosen with one specimen in mind. The Mint's collection page invites buyers to celebrate Dippy, the museum's Diplodocus replica, and the museum's head of licensing described the series as including "a nod to the nation's favourite dinosaur, Dippy".

It was not issued for circulation. The coin is missing from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, and no sales figures for 2024 coins have been published.

Robert Nicholls, the palaeo-artist behind the Mint's earlier Tales of the Earth coins, designed the reverse. Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum gave expert guidance, and the Mint says both the coin and the pack illustrations are based on scientifically accurate reconstructions. The royal proclamation describes the design simply as a depiction of a Diplodocus with the inscription DIPLODOCUS JURASSIC.

The Mint's director of commemorative coin said its craftspeople had reproduced Nicholls' technical drawings so that each dinosaur appears in fine detail.

The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with the King's titles, 50 PENCE and the date 2024. The edge is plain.
