History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III Monopoly. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Monopoly 50p was launched by the Royal Mint on 15 September 2025 to mark 90 years of the property trading game, in collaboration with Hasbro. The Mint called it the first time a board game has been celebrated on a UK coin. Its release traced the game back to The Landlord's Game, created in the early 1900s by Lizzie Magie, and dated Monopoly's official introduction to 1935.

This is a collector coin. The Mint announced it as a collectible 50p available to buy from its website, and its circulating mintage figures list only the Atlantic Salmon 50p for 2025. No sales figure has been published for the standard coin.

The launch came with a stunt. On 18 September 2025 a giant silver Top Hat toured 15 Monopoly board locations in London, and people who photographed it could win one of 100 coins.

The reverse is by Bella Biggs. The proclamation describes it as "a depiction of the character Mr. Monopoly surrounded by various components of Monopoly gameplay accompanied by the inscription 90 YEARS OF and the Monopoly logo". The Mint's release mentions game tokens, property cards and other symbols from the board.

The Mint drew most attention to a lenticular feature on the GO sign, which changes to show the M money symbol when the coin is tilted.

The denomination is on the obverse, which carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
