History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Charles III The Snowman. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Royal Mint has issued a Snowman 50p every Christmas since 2018, and the 2025 coin is, by its count, the eighth in the series. It celebrates Raymond Briggs' wordless picture book The Snowman, first published in 1978, and the animated film first broadcast on Channel 4 on 26 December 1982. The coins are made in collaboration with Snowman Enterprises and licensed by Penguin Ventures.

Like the earlier Snowman coins, this is a collector issue. The Mint's circulating mintage figures list only the Atlantic Salmon 50p for 2025, and no Snowman 50p from any year appears in them. The Mint sold the 2025 design as its official Christmas coin, in a Brilliant Uncirculated pack and in colour, silver and gold versions. It has published no sales figure.

The reverse is by Robin Shaw, the illustrator and animator credited with the Mint's Snowman designs since 2020. The proclamation describes it as "a depiction of the snowman and the boy from the book The Snowman, with a decorated Christmas tree and lights". The Mint's range page headlines the coin "The Snowman Lights Up Christmas". The 2024 coin had shown The Snowman alone, placing a star on top of the tree.

There is no inscription on the reverse. The denomination is on the obverse, which carries Martin Jennings' portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2025. The edge is plain.
